4. Juniata College: ICS design in use. The ideas and spirit of the Personal Achievement Strategy have been employed by Juniata College for a period of 40 years. When you speak to graduates of Juniata College who matriculated after 1973 and ask them, “What was your POE?” you see them light up. POE is the campus shorthand, or acronym, for “Program of Emphasis.” As soon as these graduates start to talk about their POE, you feel their excitement and passion, even though they participated in the program many years before. You might ask, “Oh, you mean your major?” “No,” they say, “it’s kind of like that…only different.”
Let’s explore what that means.
During their initial years at Juniata, students are required to define a program of studies to be their focus, their POE. Unique and unusual ideas are welcome and considered; traditional study programs are also welcome. The distinction is that the college shifts the responsibility for decision making and scheduling to the students in order to empower them. In doing this, Juniata College has evolved a curriculum model that utilizes the ideas and principles of internal control training.
In order to convey the structure and the spirit of the Juniata curriculum I am going to quote the college literature directly below, because I believe this literature conveys what I want to communicate better than I can. Here is the lead-in in Juniata College’s principle recruitment publication. Catch the spirit as well as the thought.
For many students, their range or mix of interests complicates choice of an academic focus. They need this one opportunity to explore their interests before choosing one over others.
That’s what exploration is all about. About 15 percent of the students that come to Juniata start out as what we call exploratory—they’ve not yet declared a specific Program of Emphasis, or POE. Some colleges call that “undecided,” a designation that strikes us as unfair. We know that you are seeking options, seeking to make good choices, looking to find the field or subjects that inspire and motivate you. After testing your interests, you may decide that you don’t want to choose, you want to combine. At Juniata, the POE encourages you to do this, and you can still graduate in four years.
So, you have come to the right place. Juniata faculty and students revel in exploration, in hands-on experience, in curiosity and drive and passion—to explore the world, to engage it—to think, evolve, and act. The recruitment publication goes on to make the following points:
Juniata’s distinct Program of Emphasis enables students to personalize their education. Working with two advisers, students can design an academic program around their interests and plans, for a more meaningful educational experience. Students may elect to follow an already designed program of study selected from a list of approved, or “designated,” POEs, but half of all Juniata students design their own POEs.
